Behind Every Digital Message: Design, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication in the Real World


For many years, I thought I was simply working as a graphic designer, producer, and digital media strategist. I was designing catalogs, advertisements, websites, social media campaigns, training materials, internal communication pieces, and visual strategies for clients. I was also producing videos, building brand identities, developing digital departments, writing across platforms, and helping organizations communicate with audiences that were changing quickly.


Looking back, I now understand that much of that work was also technical communication.

Behind every digital message, there is more than design. There is an audience to understand, a purpose to clarify, a structure to organize, a platform to navigate, and a set of choices that shape how people read, trust, use, and act on information. A website, a safety poster, a social media guideline, a training video, a human resources document, a catalog, and a campaign may look like different genres on the surface. Yet all of them require someone to translate information into something usable.


My background in graphic design gave me a visual language. It taught me composition, hierarchy, color, typography, proportion, rhythm, and visual identity. But my professional experience in the industry taught me that design is also a way of organizing knowledge. In real working environments, communication is never just about making something look attractive. It is about helping people understand what they need to know, what they need to do, and why it matters.

Projects such as D2 ACME helped me see how branding operates as technical communication. The visual identity was not only a logo system. It included business cards, stationery, print materials, promotional pieces, and a consistent visual language that had to communicate credibility, purpose, and institutional tone. Every visual decision carried a rhetorical function: how the organization should be perceived, how information should be ordered, and how audiences should recognize the project across different media.


That lesson became clearer when I began developing materials for companies, clients, employees, and organizations. Sometimes the task involved advertising. Other times it involved workplace policies, safety procedures, industrial communication, human resources materials, internal announcements, training documents, instructional videos, and presentations. Each project demanded more than creativity. It required clarity, structure, tone, timing, and responsibility.


In those settings, information often came to me in complex forms: conversations with managers, technical explanations from supervisors, workplace procedures, client expectations, brand goals, legal concerns, safety protocols, and institutional needs. My job was to listen, organize, translate, and transform that information into materials that people could actually use.


That is where design began to meet technical communication.


A safety message, for example, cannot depend on decoration. It must be clear, visible, memorable, and actionable. A human resources document cannot simply sound formal. It must guide people through procedures, expectations, rights, responsibilities, and institutional culture. Training material cannot overwhelm the user with information. It must sequence actions, anticipate questions, and reduce confusion. A social media policy cannot assume that employees already understand public voice, brand identity, privacy, tone, and risk. It must teach them how to communicate in a public-facing environment.


During the early rise of social media, this became especially important. Around 2007, many companies in Mexico were still beginning to trust digital media. Businesses were curious, but cautious. They could see that something was changing, but they did not always know how to enter that new space. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs, and early digital platforms were opening new possibilities, yet many organizations still understood communication through traditional advertising models.


That transition required explanation. Clients needed to understand why digital media mattered. Employees needed to learn how to use new platforms. Brands needed to develop a voice. Companies needed to recognize that digital communication was not just a place to publish announcements. It was becoming a space for interaction, visibility, response, reputation, and relationship-building.


Writing for Twitter in its early 140-character format was one of the clearest lessons in rhetorical compression. Every character mattered. A message had to carry tone, clarity, brand identity, and persuasive force in a very small space. There was no room for excess. The challenge was not simply to write something short. The challenge was to make a small message do meaningful work.


That practice taught me a great deal about audience, purpose, genre, and constraint. A tweet for a client, a headline for a campaign, a caption for a product, a subject line for an email, and a call to action on a website all involve decisions about what to emphasize, what to remove, what action to invite, and how to build trust in limited space.


The same was true in web design. Users see colors, images, buttons, menus, headlines, and text. Beneath that visible layer, however, every digital message has an invisible structure. There is code, metadata, tags, search engine optimization, information architecture, front-end design, back-end logic, platform limitations, analytics, and algorithms that shape what people can find, read, click, share, and understand.

The web and mobile optimization work extended visual identity into digital space. Once a brand moves from paper to screen, the communication problem changes. The designer must think about navigation, hierarchy, screen size, readability, usability, loading time, image placement, and the way information behaves across devices. What users see is the interface, but beneath that interface there are decisions about structure, code, tags, searchability, and platform behavior.


This is why digital communication is never only visual. It is technical, rhetorical, and infrastructural.


A website teaches users how to move through information. A menu creates expectations. A button invites action. A form organizes behavior. A tag helps content circulate. A search description shapes whether someone enters a page. A headline frames interpretation. A layout directs attention. Even the parts users do not see influence the experience they eventually have.


Developing digital marketing departments helped me understand communication as a system. It was not enough to design isolated pieces. We had to build workflows, define audiences, create content calendars, train teams, produce reports, analyze metrics, write guidelines, design campaigns, and convince organizations that digital media was becoming part of their public identity.


That work required translation across many groups. Designers, clients, managers, programmers, sales teams, media producers, and audiences did not always speak the same language. Part of my work was to connect those languages. I had to explain creative decisions to business owners, technical limitations to clients, audience behavior to managers, brand strategy to employees, and digital culture to organizations that were still learning to trust it.


Those experiences prepared me to understand technical communication long before I had the academic language for it.


Technical communication lives wherever complex information must become usable. It appears in manuals and instructions, but also in onboarding materials, safety campaigns, employee training, interface design, social media guidelines, digital strategy, SEO structures, web content, policy documents, client presentations, instructional videos, and internal communication systems. It is present whenever someone must make information clear, accessible, ethical, and actionable for a specific audience.


My professional work in design and industry taught me that clarity is not accidental. Usability is designed. Trust is constructed. Instructions are rhetorical. Digital platforms are not neutral. Every message carries assumptions about audience, access, power, identity, and action.

This is where my background in graphic design, digital media, advertising, and production connects directly with my later work in rhetoric, composition, and technical communication. What I practiced for years in professional contexts, I later learned to name through concepts such as audience, purpose, genre, multimodality, circulation, usability, accessibility, persuasion, and ethics.


I did not arrive at technical communication from theory alone. I arrived through client meetings, campaign deadlines, production schedules, web projects, training materials, social media strategies, industrial communication needs, and the challenge of explaining complex information to real people in real contexts.


That is why I see technical communication as one of the most practical forms of rhetorical work. It is not limited to writing instructions. It involves designing conditions for understanding. It helps people move through information, technologies, institutions, and decisions.


Behind every digital message, there is a visible layer and an invisible architecture. There is design, structure, content, strategy, technology, human judgment, platform behavior, and audience experience. Each layer influences how a message is found, read, trusted, and used.


My journey through graphic design, professional media, digital marketing, and industry taught me to see those layers. My academic work helped me explain them. My teaching now allows me to help students recognize them, question them, and create with greater intention.


Because in the real world, communication does not happen in abstract spaces. It happens through screens, documents, interfaces, policies, campaigns, workflows, algorithms, and people.


And behind every one of those messages, there is always a rhetorical decision.
