Border Soundscapes
A Sonic Journey Across the U.S.–Mexico Border
An interdisciplinary digital humanities initiative exploring rhetoric, sound, place, identity, and multimodal storytelling through interactive media.
Border Soundscapes
"Some places are best understood by looking at them. Others reveal themselves only when we learn to listen."
Border Soundscapes invites visitors to experience the U.S.–Mexico border through a medium that is often overlooked but deeply revealing: sound. Rather than approaching the border solely through maps, statistics, or political narratives, this project explores the everyday acoustic life of communities whose stories unfold through voices, street vendors, musicians, celebrations, trains, neighborhoods, and moments of ordinary human connection.
Combining digital humanities, rhetoric, sound studies, and interactive media, the project transforms field recordings into a living archive of place, memory, and belonging. Each recording becomes more than documentation; it becomes an entry point into the cultural landscapes that shape border identities and experiences.
At a time when borders are frequently represented through conflict and division, Border Soundscapes offers an alternative perspective—one that foregrounds community, resilience, and the richness of everyday life. Whether you are interested in digital scholarship, multimodal storytelling, or simply curious about the unseen dimensions of place, this project invites you to stop, listen, and encounter the border in a different way.
